How the plan works
Each vegetable has a typical number of plants that keeps one person in fresh produce through the growing season, and a typical amount of space each plant needs. The planner multiplies both by your household and your goal. These are starting points; a big zucchini plant can feed a family by itself, while lettuce and beans are often planted in small batches every few weeks.
Tips for a first garden
Start smaller than you think. A well-tended 100 square foot garden produces more than a neglected 400 square foot one. Choose the vegetables your household actually eats, and put the garden where it gets at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun.
Common questions
What is succession planting?
Sowing a few plants every two to three weeks instead of all at once. It works well for lettuce, beans, radishes and carrots, giving a steady harvest instead of one glut.
Can I plant closer in raised beds?
Yes. Loose, rich soil in raised beds lets you plant more tightly than in rows, often fitting a third to half more plants in the same space.
