Spacing is measured from the middle of one stone to the middle of the next.

How far apart should stepping stones be?

Most adults walk comfortably with stones 22 to 26 inches apart, center to center. Before buying, lay a few pieces of cardboard on the ground and walk the path at a normal pace. Measure where your feet naturally land, and use that spacing.

How the math works

The path length divided by the spacing gives the number of stones. A 30 foot path at 24 inch spacing needs 15 stones. With 18 inch stones, that leaves a 6 inch gap of grass or gravel between each pair.

How to set stepping stones

Place each stone and cut around it with a spade. Dig the hole about 2 inches deeper than the stone is thick, add sand, and set the stone so its top sits level with the ground or slightly above. A stone that rocks underfoot needs more sand on the low side.

Common questions

What size stepping stones should I use?

Stones at least 16 to 18 inches across give a full footprint and feel steady. Smaller stones work for a decorative path that's rarely walked.

Should stepping stones sit above the grass?

Set them level with the soil or just slightly higher, so a mower can pass right over them. Stones that stick up become a tripping hazard.
